Soil retention

As part of our Farming Award, we have looked at how much water different types of soil retain. We used meadow soil, sandy soil, chalky soil and clay soil. We put the soil on filter paper in a funnel and then poured 50ml of water over each one. We then looked at how much water filtered into the measuring cup after a few minutes. If a lot of water filtered through the soil then we know the soil is not good at retaining water. If there was less water filtered through the soil, then we know that soil retains more water, which is good for growing plants.

Which type of soil would be the best to grow plants in?
